Building Great Media Relations with Reporters

Once a PR database of reporters has been built, good PR firms like Front Page PR have very experienced media relations experts that begin to work their PR database to begin building relationships between their client’s executives and their list of reporters. These relationships require a lot of time and effort to build, but will lead to many successful media interviews over time.

This process also involves media training executives and teaching them how to share the right kind of information with reporters. Providing reporters with news they can use is the best way to generate interviews that lead to news coverage and feature articles as well as lead to a long lasting relationship with each reporter. Reporters will return to their reliable sources over and over to write numerous stories once a relationship has been built. This is not a process that occurs overnight, but over time.

Working and cleaning a list of 300 reporters at several hundred media outlets takes many, many hours of work. To qualify a reporter, Front Page PR downloads the media outlet’s full media kit. We analyze the editorial calendar for news story opportunities, the audit statement to see who its subscribers are and readership studies that show current industry trends. In addition, we research at least 3 to 6 of the reporter’s most recent stories to see what beat they cover and the formula they follow to write their stories.

This makes it possible to write a very precise media pitch that a reporter will respond to. When a reporter reads their emails, they know in about 3 seconds how much research a PR executive did before writing their media pitch. If you send a “square” pitch to a “circle” magazine, they know know it immediately and quickly hit the delete email button.

And even if when you make a successful media pitch and the reporter says yes, it takes many hours of emailing, checking executive and reporter schedules, and making phone calls just to get one interview setup. While it requires a lot of time and effort, once media relationships are built with an executive, reporters will continue call back for another quote every time they write a story on a similar subject matter.

If you would like to start building  media relations with A-list reporters in your industry, please contact Front Page PR and we will help your company get started.
